Two names come up in almost every conversation about proving your security to clients: Cyber Essentials and ISO 27001. They are not competitors — they solve different problems — but choosing the wrong one first can waste months of effort. Here is how to decide.

What Cyber Essentials is

Cyber Essentials is a UK government-backed scheme covering five fundamental technical controls: firewalls, secure configuration, user access control, malware protection, and security update management. Certification is assessed against a self-assessment questionnaire (Cyber Essentials) or an independent technical audit (Cyber Essentials Plus).

It is fast to achieve — typically weeks, not months — affordable, and mandatory for many UK government contracts. For most SMEs, it is the correct first certification.

What ISO 27001 is

ISO 27001 is the international standard for an information security management system (ISMS). Rather than checking five technical controls, it requires you to identify your information risks, document how you manage them, and continuously improve. Certification involves a formal two-stage external audit and ongoing surveillance audits.

It takes months to implement properly and costs significantly more — but it is recognised worldwide and is increasingly demanded by enterprise clients, insurers, and regulated industries.

The key differences

Scope: Cyber Essentials covers baseline technical hygiene. ISO 27001 covers your entire approach to information risk — people, processes, physical security, suppliers, and technology.

Effort: Cyber Essentials is measured in weeks. ISO 27001 is measured in months and requires ongoing maintenance.

Recognition: Cyber Essentials is UK-focused and often a contractual tick-box. ISO 27001 carries weight internationally and in enterprise procurement.

Which should you choose?

If you are an SME starting out, pursuing UK government work, or need to demonstrate baseline security quickly: start with Cyber Essentials, then Cyber Essentials Plus.

If you handle sensitive data at scale, sell to enterprises, or operate internationally: plan for ISO 27001 — but build it on top of Cyber Essentials hygiene, not instead of it.

Many of our clients do both in sequence. We guide businesses through gap analysis, remediation, and audit preparation for both frameworks, so certification becomes a by-product of genuinely better security rather than a paperwork exercise.
